A Tale of Two Caddies

With all the pomp and splendour that is Abu Dhabi, and its claim of, “Understated Luxury” for the tourist, the absurdity of that always makes me smile when you look around you; 7-star hotels, a clubhouse you could fit a golf course into etc .. In among all that it was good to have a couple of long chats with our two caddies that I mentioned often last season ….

The first caddie I met up with last year and we had numerous chats, he was in full flow, he of the ducking and diving attribute whereby he gets his bit in and then flees before having to hear anything that anyone else might contribute, he has it to an art form … There are occasions though when he does linger, generally because he thinks his point is strong, and we had one of these times on the putting green this week …. He reckons he has the “ear” of God, and how do I know he doesn’t?  We were able to dwell on the many references to how we see the Spirit in the child of God and how you can’t and can see faith …. A good time, where he listened!Rory McIlroy at Abu Dhadi

The second caddie,” he of the God, Jesus don’t exist party”, yet talks about them all during his conversation, really should record this sometime so he can hear himself, then again he’d probably deny it was him … Whereas Julian knows God is there, Reggie says the opposite and they are at opposite spectrums and yet both far from God … still, two more likeable and congenial people you couldn’t meet, despite the disparity in our chats we always leave with smiles and a promise for another time … Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see these two men saved!  Do keep praying for them …

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. “Romans 10:17

Logos on tour in Portugal

Alexander Levy on his way to win the title

The final week of the European based part of the Tour is very popular and many players, caddies and others at the event bring their families out with them, disappointingly this year went out, not with the usual sunshine, but with a thunderstorm or two or three, as the event was reduced to only 36 holes …. In my four years going there the Thursday was the first time I’d seen rain, that day and Friday brought enough to do another four years, for when it rains, it really rains …

You may recall, I have asked you to pray for a chap who was looking for a caddy job after our last meet up in Switzerland and he has found one … I also met up with him and his girlfriend a couple of times so it was good to share the role of what I do there in more detail and I’ll meet up with him again over the next few weeks in Belfast … Do keep him on your prayer list ….

I got together with the caddy, with whom I had a long talk at Aberdeen and then he intimated wanted to do a bible study the other week, so we duly met up and I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone with so little idea of God, who he reckons is a myth, as is all to do with the entire “Christian myth” as he sees it … he confidently predicts he will return as reincarnation exists and so it goes on …. He is such a friendly bloke though and always leaves with a smile, which I think really means he thinks what I tell of Jesus is ludicrously humorous to him … As we know, God can open any heart …

The next time I’m away is when the tour reaches Sth Africa in late November for a four week spell, and it really isn’t right me having to go there in the midst of our winter and their boiling hot summer, But Logos make me do it!!!

Jaidee at the Open Wales

One of those weeks where I was bumping into everyone one after the other, which was terrific …. I’d love to say all the chats were God-centred but they covered a wide range; Scottish vote [which was much on the mind of many there], the last few weeks of the season and the job prospects for those on the cut line [players and caddies], new babies on the way and recently arrived, the lamenting of what appears to be the last Wales Open as it isn’t on next year’s schedule and with others how they were being treated by their employers in a variety of roles within the Tour Circus …

In amongst it all one always has the opportunity to point to God in some way or other ….

Did meet our old fiend, Andy Gorman, the putting coach and believer who is doing well with his business but has a few tricky situations in home life, do remember him …

Hennie Otto withdrew after one round, but thankfully not with any recurrence of back trouble, just feeling unwell …Nicholas Colesaerts

There was more buzz than usual at the event due to four Ryder Cup players taking part and speaking of the Ryder Cup do please pray for the “Logos Scotland” meeting in Glasgow on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm (at Easterhouse Baptist Church) and the following week for the “Panel” answering questions at the Dunhill evening on the 1st of October …

Off to Scotland for the next two weeks and with the vote outcome, no visa required!

Dutch Open – Zandvoort Amsterdam – Sept 10 to 12Logos on tour at the Dutch Open

The prize for a hole in one at the par 3 fifteenth hole at the Dutch Open was a trip into space!  This was worth $100,000 and lasted only one hour of which between four and six minutes were in actual space …. The players weren’t too annoyed by not achieving a hole in one?  Sadly one of the players, Fabrizio Zanotti was seeing stars of a different kind. On the next fairway he was hit full on the head by a stay shot from the neighbouring fairway, there was a two hour delay for an ambulance, medical attention and he was taken to hospital, gladly in the end all was well, at least as well as can be expected after being hit by a golf ball going at 200 mph …. By evening he was sitting up and recovered …Logos on tour dutch open hole in one prize

You may recall I mentioned the caddie, with whom I had a one hour discussion with at the Scottish Open after the memorial service, well for those of you who have been praying for him he approached me on the range saying he’d like to do a bible study, now what he calls a bible study and what is a study to us, will be very different but keep praying that this will come to be …. Our friend (another caddie) is back to his ducking and diving best but between Hennie and I we sent him some Christian literature to read, and I know he will, so that was good …

Hennie and I had a real good one – to – one time on Wednesday evening and it is always good to intentionally study the word and talk of the things of God ….

This coming week is a hop over to the Wales Open at Celtic Manor, a past Ryder Cup venue before that tournament takes place the following week at Gleneagles …

Two prayer requests for you; We are having our first “Logos Scotland” night on the 24th, on Ryder Cup week, (at Easterhouse Baptist Church 7 for 7:30pm) in Glasgow … Then the following week at the Dunhill event in St Andrews an open meeting has been arranged at one of the local golf clubs where a panel made up of me, Hennie, Mike Vlismas [who is with the media in SA covering the event] and one other [possibly Vincent Brown, club pro in Scotland and involved with the meeting in Glasgow] …. We’d be appreciative of your prayers for these two evenings …

Memorial Service – Tuesday NightPhil Mickelson at the Scottish Open Ian Poulter playing an unusual bunker shot

As I have said often you never quite know what’s coming up with Tour folks, and I was ready for whatever was to come, good job …

The talk was to precede the charity cricket match at around 5.45-6pm, and true to form with players and caddies working on the course quite late, and everyone arriving in dribs and drabs, the cricket match went ahead before the memorial …. Then come the end of the cricket match at 9.30, the World Cup semi-final was allowed to get to half-time before the talk, then the auction etc ..

The two caddies who took to do with the arrangements then announced to all at the cricket club; players, tour officials, caddies, the other cricket team and actually any others who were there who had nothing to do with what was going on that the TV was going off and the memorial went ahead …. They are a scream really; when they act they act …

Quite amazingly, everyone there listened intently … and it was clear just how fresh the sudden death of Mac had impacted them and the pain was clear to see …

So many thanks to all for your encouraging messages and prayers … God had His way

Christ Embassy Meeting – Wednesday Night

Lee Vannet, club pro and believer in Aberdeen kindly arranged a time for a Logos talk during the normal Wednesday night meeting of his church … This may well be the beginning of a relationship that will blossom as the good folks here, mainly Nigerian, are very much into outreach … A warm and friendly welcome and blessing was had … many thanks Lee ….

As I often say, all things on tour come in little steps, but the memorial served up a bigger step and several people who were there made a point of coming up to me in the week to have a chat … this was the case with a caddie, we had a full and frank discussion for an hour and a half in the middle of the driving range and it caused me to remind myself that it is so important to realise that unsaved people are both spiritually blind and deaf, if we came into contact with someone who was physically blind and deaf then we’d make a lot of allowances for them, so do put this caddie in your prayers …

A good week was had and I’m meeting up with Ricky Gray and Vincent Brown, the two club pros in the Glasgow area, over the weekend to plan something for Ryder Cup week in September …

Next week; The Open in Royal Liverpool, having a right Royal time at the moment

French Open 2014

France Open Versailles Paris July 01 – 03french open 2014 french open 2014-1

France does it again …. After the last years debacle there was a plane delay on the way back for two and a half hours in Paris, missing the next connection and so a night spent in the joys of Luton airport …

The week went well and it was good to meet up with those who are involved with the memorial  (Memorial service; 5:45pm Tuesday July 8)  for “Mac” the caddie in Aberdeen …. It turns out that they are asking me to take the whole service and I shall also do the eulogy on info passed on from them and others.  Mac’s close friends say that they will find it too emotional to speak, but there will be an open time for anyone to say a word or two on Mac.

I had a great long chat with a caddie, who is beginning to hang around more rather and listen, than the ducking & diving he is renowned for … His topic this week was the Jews and why they are seen the way they are and why they are so dispersed, so it was good to be able to look into this with him from “You will become a thing of horror, a byword and an object of ridicule among all the peoples where the LORD will drive you.”  (Deut 28:37) He was duly struck that the answers are all in the Word…

I asked that you pray for a SMS colleague who was in a bad way with, as we thought, kidney stones last week.  Turns out that it isn’t stones but failures in the kidney itself, which they are still looking into to find out just what is causing this, do keep John in your prayers ….

Do Pray for the Memorial service; 5:45pm Tuesday July 8 …

BMW German Masters Cologne June 23 – 26

BMW German Masters 2014 BMW German Masters 2014-1In Cologne this week …. “To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life …”  (2 Cor 2:16)

Tuesday was one of those days when every corner I turned, every time I looked around and wherever I went I bumped into someone who was ready to talk … Those days are rare and treasured and an assurance of your prayers that both go ahead and follow me …

Those of you who have been praying for; a Scottish golfer, two caddies, a photographer and the pending memorial service for the caddie who died, “Mac,” then know that all these were in amongst this week’s Godincidences ….

Topics for prayer;

Hennie; he is considering surgery for his ongoing back situation …

Memorial Service; looks to be going ahead on the Tuesday July 8 at 5pm in Aberdeen

Scottish Open; for the meeting on the Wednesday evening at the church of Lee Vannet, a club pro in Aberdeen

One of the SMS personnel that I do the survey with each Thursday and he was in agony this week with what looks like symptoms of kidney stones, if you’ve ever had this you’ll know what I mean by agony …

Irish open logos on tour Irish openBible Bookshops – Belligerent Buggies – Bad Backs and Ballymena’s Best

Baking sunshine for the week came as a pleasant and welcome surprise when the Tour reached the British Isles … 28 Degrees on Wednesday!!!!

Bible Bookshops

I received a text message from Hennie [Otto] when on the way to Cork looking for a bold print NIV bible for one of the caddies,  … I had an interesting time seeking out a Christian bookshop in Cork and duly found a small second hand one that was owned by a Believing gentleman, Billy O’Mahoney who was in the priesthood before hearing of being born-again and finding Jesus as his personal saviour.  It was good too meet him and he was equally delighted too find out that there was a presence on the Tour …. Pray for Dean that he will read the word and find Jesus …

Belligerent Buggies

Jake Roos got a very late entry and we met up … Jake always reminds me of the verse “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “ [Matt 5:6] which describes him … I had noticed he’d had a really poor event in St Omer the previous week, +12 then withdrawing and he told me the story … On the Challenge Tour you are not compelled to have a caddie and Jake was going down one of the many hills on the course with his three wheeled buggy and thought he’d just let it run down to the bottom of the hill, well the front wheel was out of alignment and the buggy headed toward the lake followed by a galloping Jake, who didn’t catch it and into deep water it went … clubs ruined, phone destroyed, Jake soaked in the rescue .. He didn’t see the funny side, but everyone else did …

Bad Backs

Hennie returned after three weeks out with a bad back, played round one and had a one under 70, then had to withdraw before the second round, back troubles again and has since gone home to SA for further treatment …. He is very happy and thankful for all to pray for healing, so I’d ask you to do this ….

Ballymena’s Best

Our own Dermot McElroy was playing his fourth Irish Open and it looks as if he shall be leaving the amateur ranks at the end of the year … Good too meet up with him and his family during the week … He didn’t make the cut, mind you neither did the other McIlroy ….

Austrian Open Atzenbrugg Vienna

Austrian Open Atzenbrugg Vienna June 03-06Joost Luiten at Austrian Open Mikael Lundberg winner Austrian OPen

I asked last week that you pray for the memorial service for the caddie, Iain MacGregor [Mac], who collapsed and died on the course in the Madeira Open and that the Tour were looking to hold this occasion at Aberdeen prior to the Scottish Open … Well, this is going ahead on the Tuesday [July 8] of that week at 5pm at the local cricket club where they hold the annual charity cricket match between the Tour [players, caddies etc] and a local cricket side … I have been asked to say a few words at this service … I would reckon practically every player, caddy and all those connected with the tour in its many facets will attend …. Ask God to provide the appropriate words for this, and that the arrangements will be in His hands …

As for this week past, once again I had a chat with the caddy who with the ongoing success of his player is employed at the weekends and the tug of home and business is continuing to perturb him …

It was good to meet up with the SAs; Jake, James and JBe and have a chat separately and a time together as one  ….

This coming week is the US Open so no travel for me, a welcome week at the homestead and then the Irish open to follow at Cork the week after

“Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne.  The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.”  (Rev 8:3-4)

If I could describe the meaningfulness of your prayers for me and Logos I would, but they are beyond words and value …

Thank you
